"Tip", the man waving the bottle of Thai whiskey, told me that in the past this dark stretch of road had been the scene a few tourist muggings by the local gangsters. The village installed a street light and these villagers hang out into the wee hours of the night beside the road with a campfire in order to keep the area safe.
Tip also leads off-road multi-day treks on motorcross bikes to the an area near the Burma border where he grew up. I really want to go on one of these next time I'm in Pai.
